About the stadium
El Molinón-Enrique Castro "Quini" is one of the oldest and most distinctive stadiums in Spain. Built just steps from the Isabel La Católica park and the San Lorenzo beach, it occupies an unusual setting for a football ground. With a capacity of around 30,000 seats, it is the home of Real Sporting de Gijón, who have played here since 1917.
Considered the oldest professional football stadium in Spain, it was first documented in 1908. The name comes from a water mill that once stood on the site. Rebuilt and expanded several times over the decades, it was one of the venues for the 1982 World Cup, hosting three West Germany matches, including the infamous "Disgrace of Gijón" against Austria. Renovation plans to modernise the facilities while retaining the stadium's character are currently under consideration.
El Molinón is now an all-seater stadium, known for its stands that sit close to the pitch and for the atmosphere generated by La Mareona, the Rojiblancos supporters, who follow their team in large numbers across Spain.
The club offers guided tours from €8. Tours last approximately 90 minutes and are led by a guide, departing from gate 0. The route includes areas normally closed to the public: the press room, dressing rooms, tunnel, pitchside, and the club museum. Worth a visit for anyone passing through.
