About the stadium
Located in the modern Bijlmermeer district, in southeast Amsterdam, the Johan Cruyff ArenA is the home stadium of Ajax Amsterdam. It is also the largest stadium in the Netherlands, with a capacity of over 55,000 seats.
Opened in 1996 under the name Amsterdam ArenA, it was renamed in 2018 in tribute to Johan Cruyff, a club legend and one of the defining figures of Dutch football.
Its retractable roof (which closes in around thirty minutes) made it a reference point for stadium design when it opened. The venue hosts Ajax matches, Dutch national team fixtures, and major international events: the Euro 2000, Euro 2020, the 1998 Champions League final, as well as concerts by artists including Beyoncé, U2, and Coldplay.
Visitors can explore the stadium through the Stadium Tour, which covers the official dressing rooms, the players' tunnel, the pitchside area, the press room, and Ajax's trophy gallery. The tour traces the major moments of Dutch football and pays tribute to Johan Cruyff.
The Johan Cruyff ArenA is straightforward to reach by metro (lines 50 and 54, station Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA) or by train from Amsterdam Centraal. It sits within a broader complex that includes the Ziggo Dome, the Amsterdamse Poort shopping centre, and a range of restaurants.
