About the stadium

El Sardinero, officially Campos de Sport de El Sardinero, has been the home of Real Racing Club de Santander since it opened in 1988. It was built right next to the old stadium, which was torn down that same year. It currently holds 22,308 spectators.

The ground sits in the Sardinero district, a coastal area a short walk from the beach and Las Llamas park, about 2.5 km from the city center. This stretch of shoreline was once used for fishing and drying sardines, which is where the name "Sardinero" comes from, first given to the neighborhood and later to the stadium.

A modernization project called Nuevo Sardinero is currently under review. It would raise capacity to 27,000 spectators, add a forecourt of more than 26,000 m², create new facilities (a museum, restaurants and shops) and install four to six lifts in each side stand to improve access.

El Sardinero offers a guided tour with access to the club museum, the dressing rooms, the press room and pitchside, led by a specialist guide. The tour also includes a virtual reality experience that recreates the players walking out onto the pitch on matchday.

We bough tickets for a Friday evening match on the previous Monday on the Racing Santander website. The stadium is easy to walk to from Old Town Santander - 20 or so minutes - and getting inside is easy with big signs over each entrance and friendly stewards to help. Facilities are basic within with basic food and drinks available for purchase and the toilets accessible and acceptable. The crowd was a great mix of young to old and everything in between with a great mix of both male and female supporters. And hard green plastic seats are actually quite comfortable!

Vamos racing! As soccer lover I had to visit this historical team home, unfortunately there were no games so I did a walk around, hope to see this team in first division again

Loved the atmosphere, great venue for football, great support from fans, good to see Real Racing win in a very close game. However, watching the game through a Perspex shield is not acceptable … even for 28 Euros!

Took us a while to buy tickets for the match but the staff checking tickets were very nice, the atmosphere was brilliant for a Monday night game and the stadium itself was in good condition. Highly recommended trip for a football fan.
