About the stadium

In Bilbao, football is something close to a religion, and San Mamés Barria is its temple. Nicknamed "The Cathedral", this 53,000-seat stadium opened in 2013. It replaced the century-old original ground without losing its identity. Built on the banks of the Nervión, a short walk from the Guggenheim museum, it fits neatly into modern Bilbao, a city that stays true to its roots while looking ahead.

Its striking design, with a semi-transparent façade and LED lighting effects, earned it the title of best sports building in the world at the 2015 World Architecture Festival, and best stadium of the year at the 2017 World Football Summit. On matchdays the place comes alive with chants, tifos and red-and-white passion. The atmosphere is rated among the most electric in Europe.

This is where the Lions of Athletic Club roar. Founded in 1898, the club is known for its philosophy of developing and fielding only players from the Basque Country. That strong identity feeds an unbreakable bond between the club, the city and its supporters.

The Tour & Museoa is one of the most thorough in Spain and takes you behind the scenes of the Rojiblancos: the first-team dressing room, the players' tunnel, pitchside, the press room, the mixed zone and more. The 90-minute tour also includes the Athletic Club Museum, an interactive space tracing more than 125 years of history, iconic objects and trophies.

San Mamés is also a place to spend time: fine-dining restaurants such as San Mamés Jatetxea, bars and a panoramic tavern open to the public, VIP areas and cultural or sporting events throughout the year. The stadium regularly hosts major occasions, from European rugby finals and international concerts to the 2025 Europa League final.

Easy to reach by metro (San Mamés station), tram or on foot from the city centre, it is one of the essential stops on any visit to Bilbao.

A brilliant tour/museum combo! The museum itself is really impressive and very engaging, covering all aspects of the clubs history on and off the field. Following that our tour was brilliant - our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly, giving the tour bilingually and providing plenty of information and facts. The tour takes you around the stadium, into the press room, changing rooms, presidential box and more, and is well worth it for anyone remotely interested in the club or in football at all. Following that you get to enjoy the gift shop and can even re-enter the museum! If you have a tour, bare in mind the museum is LONG and you need to be at the end by your stated start time, so allocate a good 30-60 mins before to get through the museum or plan to enjoy it after the tour!

When we arrived we were a little lost but the staff at the shop kindly directed us to the museum. Our tour guide was great, she accommodated us as the only English speakers as I only knew bits of Spanish. She had loads of information and was willing to answer any questions. The tour itself is very interactive and at a good pace. The museum is incredible, so many interactive screen to learn more about the club at your own pace. The design of the museum was amazing. It's one of the best football museum tours I have experienced.

One of the best club museums I've visited. It's very interactive with puzzles, great videos and plenty to explore. Definitely not a quick walk-through. You get a solid look at the club's history, the trophies, and also some interesting coverage of the new stadium's architecture. Easy to recommend from an Arsenal fan!

Visiting this stadium is like becoming a part of the fan spirit in this city. I have visited many stadiums in the world, but this complex has the best-organized museum. A real experience with going out onto the pitch, the gym, the Vip Lounge... a must-see. The ticket is not expensive. Don't hesitate

I really enjoyed the tour and museum, Athletic Club has a unique history, combining tradition, values, and modernity. And San Mamés has a fabulous and different atmosphere! I recommend that anyone visiting Bilbao to also visit the stadium and the club's museum and learn more a out this club's passion for sports.

If you’re in Bilbao, and have a passing interest in football or architecture, go to this museum. It’s probably the best football club museum I’ve ever been to - certainly the one I’ve most enjoyed. The exhibits are genuinely interesting and tells the story of Athletic Bilbao in detail. It leaves you with a lasting impression of the club’s role in its community, and of how seriously they take that responsibility. Many of the exhibits are interactive, so it’s a great place to take children of they have an interest in football. The visit includes seeing the changing rooms, press area and conference rooms, dugout, a pitch-side walk, sitting in the Club President’s chair and munch more. One important advice: bring your own phone and headphones. We went on the ‘DIY’ tour where we listened to the information through our smartphones. I’m guessing it would have been annoying having to hold our phones to our ears to listen to the guide. But I really liked this option because we ended up staying on the tour for over two and a half hours! We went during August, and were able to buy last season’s shirt for €22. Excellent.

A fully immersive experience for the hardcore Athletico Bilbao fan or general football enthusiast. Much like the club itself, the museum balances cutting-edge technology with deep respect for tradition; access to the ground was truly thrilling.
