About the stadium
Home of River Plate and the largest stadium in Argentina, El Monumental has dominated the Núñez neighborhood since 1938. Conceived by club president Antonio Vespucio Liberti (whose name it now carries), the ground was designed from the outset to be exactly what its name suggests: a monumental venue capable of hosting the biggest moments in Argentine football. Expanded for the 1978 World Cup, it remains the stadium where Argentina claimed its first world title, beating the Netherlands in a deafening atmosphere that has passed into football legend.
With a capacity recently raised beyond 80,000 seats and an oval now entirely given over to football, the Monumental is the home ground of the Argentine national team, but above all of River Plate. The highlight of the calendar is the Superclásico against Boca Juniors, widely considered the biggest derby in the game.
The complex includes a thorough museum that walks visitors through the club's history: a 360° audiovisual show, trophy displays, accounts of major campaigns, and photographs of the legends who wore the red-banded shirt. Guided tours give access to the stands, the dressing rooms, and the pitch-side, the same ground once walked by the likes of Pelé and Maradona.
Easily reached from Palermo, Belgrano, or Recoleta, a stop at the Monumental is a natural addition to any visit to Buenos Aires. Whether you come for a match or just a stadium tour, it offers a close look at what Argentine football is built on.
