About the stadium
Opened in January 1998 for the FIFA World Cup, the Stade de France is the largest stadium in the country, with more than 80,000 seats in football/rugby configuration. Located in Saint-Denis, it remains forever linked to the historic 3-0 victory over Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final.
Since then, it has hosted major events: three Champions League finals, two Rugby World Cups (2007 and 2023), Euro 2016, and the 2024 Olympic Games, making it one of a handful of stadiums worldwide to have staged football and rugby World Cup finals as well as Olympic competition.
Designed as a multi-purpose facility, it is defined by its elliptical roof weighing 13,000 tonnes, suspended 42 metres above the ground, and by its retractable lower tiers, which can be moved to reveal or conceal the athletics track. This flexibility allows configurations of up to 96,000 spectators for concerts. The GrassMaster hybrid pitch provides a durable playing surface capable of handling both matches and large-scale shows back to back.
Without a resident club, the stadium is the home of Les Bleus in both football and rugby. It hosts the Coupe de France final every year, the major fixtures of the Six Nations Tournament, and numerous international matches. Its stands have also seen some of the biggest names in music, from U2 to Beyoncé, Coldplay, and Madonna.
Outside of events, the Stade de France is open for guided tours, taking visitors behind the scenes: changing rooms, warm-up areas, the players' tunnel, hospitality boxes, and pitchside access, along with a museum space featuring construction archives, scale models, and memorabilia from major competitions. Around one million visitors come through each year to explore the inner workings of this large-scale facility.
Served by several RER and metro lines, the Stade de France is among the best-connected venues in Île-de-France. In under thirty years, the stadium in Saint-Denis has established itself as one of the most recognisable arenas in Europe.
