About the stadium

Located in Fulham, west London, Stamford Bridge has been Chelsea Football Club's home since 1905. Opened in 1877, it was originally built for athletics before Gus Mears, the club's founder, converted it into a football ground. The name comes from an old bridge over the Counter's Creek river, and the stadium's history runs parallel to that of English football.

Current capacity stands at around 40,000 seats. That puts it outside the largest grounds in the country, though it remains one of the most recognizable. From FA Cup finals in the 1920s to modern European nights, Stamford Bridge has hosted some of the game's greats: Lampard, Drogba, Zola, Terry. The stands sit close to the pitch, giving it a distinctly English feel.

The ground has four main stands: the Matthew Harding Stand (north), the Shed End (south), the large modern West Stand, and the older East Stand. Adjacent to the stadium, the Chelsea Village complex houses hotels, restaurants, and the Chelsea Megastore. The club museum covers more than a century of history, including both Champions League titles (2012 and 2021).

The Stadium Tour is one of the most popular in London, offering access to the dressing rooms, players' tunnel, press room, substitutes' bench, and pitchside, a close-up look at the day-to-day workings of the Blues.

The ground is easily reached by Underground via Fulham Broadway (District Line). Stamford Bridge is worth a visit for any football fan, whether attending a Premier League match or touring one of European football's well-known venues.
